International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Publishing date: 11.02.2020

On December 22nd, 2015, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution (A/RES/70/212) to establish an annual day to mark and celebrate the essential role that women and girls around the world play in the fields of science and technology. Since then, the “International Day of Women and Girls in Science” is celebrated each year on February 11th.

The special annual day supports gender equality, which is one of the UN’s global priorities, and provides an opportunity to raise the profile and challenge the view of women in science. It also strengthens efforts to empower both women and girls to follow a career in science, whatever their background, because overcoming some of today’s major challenges, such as combatting climate change or improving health requires scientific talent – both male and female.

Despite all the global efforts over the past decade to inspire and engage women and girls in science, findings show that they continue to be excluded from becoming fully involved in this field. According to the UNESCO’s current research and data from 2014-2016, still only less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women and only approximately 30% of female students in higher education select STEM-related career paths.

Science is vital to much of what we do. It is at the core of SONGWON’s operations and we have a diverse, competent and dedicated team of scientific experts. Fully aware of the crucial role all women play in the global workforce, we value those in our organization and highly commend their commitment. Our female scientists, in particular, are world-class in their fields.

At SONGWON, we champion diversity, inclusion and gender equality. As a leading organization, we do our best to positively encourage more women and girls to consider STEM careers. And not just on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, do we stop to celebrate and recognize the talent of our female scientists, acknowledge their dedication to our business and our industry, or praise them for being such exemplary role models for other women and girls. SONGWON applauds their contributions every day as well as those of all the other amazing women in science all over the world. The world needs science, SONGWON needs science and science needs women.
